Clifford Brown, Jr.
Vice Chairman of the Board
Clifford Brown, Jr. was born in Philadelphia, Pa. and raised in Los Angeles. His father was the legendary, internationally acclaimed jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown. His mother, La Rue Brown, helped break the color barrier in the modeling world by being the first African American to work as a talent booker for a major white agency. After Clifford Senior’s death La Rue raised young Clifford to love and support the arts.
Clifford Brown Jr. began his illustrious career at the age of 18, when he got his first professional radio job. Before turning 30, he was awarded the prestigious Golden Mic for being the San Francisco Bay Area’s top radio personality. Brown has also been recognized for his programming acumen, having received the AMPEX AWARD OF EXCELLENCE as the nation’s top jazz Program Director, and having his stations nominated as “Station of the Year” multiple times. Of all the awards he has received, Brown is fondest of being named a “Living Broadcasting Legend” in 2009 by the Black Music Association. The names of people interviewed by Brown read like a Who’s Who of Jazz: Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Thelonious Monk, Sarah Vaughn, Herbie Hancock, Ella Fitzgerald, Horace Silver, Art Blakey…the list goes on and on.
As an educator, Clifford Brown Jr. has served on the teaching or lecturing staff of every major broadcasting school and university in the San Francisco Bay Area. He presently teaches at Santa Clara (CA) University. He has also conducted workshops and served on panels for numerous industry & educational entities including Jazz at Lincoln Center (New York), Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley, San Francisco State University and the California Jazz Conservatory.
In addition to producing, lecturing, and teaching, Brown hosts and produces one of the most listened to syndicated jazz radio programs in the nation “The American Jazz Countdown” and serves on the Board of Directors for the California Jazz Conservatory, The Jazz School in Berkeley, and the Clifford Brown Jazz Foundation. His current passion project is helping to protect and empower families, small businesses, and individuals in our community by serving as Regional Director of the Greater San Francisco Bay Area for LegalShield.
Clifford is happily married to Pat Thomas for nearly 30 years now, has 3 adult children and 2 grandchildren.
