Urban City Youth History

Urban City Youth began in Los Angeles, California in January of 2012. Headquartered above Julia’s Hair Weave Salon and located in the Crenshaw district of Los Angeles, seventy-three students have graduated since its inception. Most have gone on to secure notable careers in the media industry.

The primary training focus is radio show productions that air in top tier markets. The Urban City Youth Radio show has aired weekly on terrestrial radio stations KDYA radio in San Francisco and KTYM radio in Los Angeles, California, respectively.

Our Media Production Process

Urban City Youth production teams meet weekly to produce two thirty-minute radio shows. They plan, organize, produce and edit them for a problem/solution-oriented format.

The process begins with selection of a topic considered to be highly important to the team followed by research, outline development, show structure design and layout, identifying talent segments, recording special external and/or internal interview segments, writing and producing commercials and promotional announcements.

The next step is to produce, record and edit the show to meet quality control standards per FCC guidelines. Once green lighted by the UCY Quality Control Committee, students deliver the show to the appropriate radio station within a designated time frame.

Throughout the production process, students learn key skills including, but not limited to, the art of expression, English literacy, public speaking, advanced phonics, articulation, vocal delivery & dynamics, professional debate on-air, critical thinking on air, collaboration, leadership, professional communication (clean speech), organization, time value, kindly attitude, best performance of duty, equality, inclusion, diversity and social justice.

Most students enjoy opportunities to express humor, wit and special interviews with entrepreneurs who share sage wisdom. Students are paid $15 per hour for their work. These funds are provided by local junior college partners. Participating students have enhanced their confidence in public speaking and communication. At- risk students under 18 years of age have community service opportunities to expunge their police record. Visit Urban City Youth Radio Productions at UCY Radio Page

Gospel and Gumbo (G&G) is a fundraiser event that provides culinary training for local youth. Both therapeutic and rehabilitative, the goal is to reduce recidivism through a diversity inclusion program that educates in the best practices of providing tasty Louisiana cuisine to the Gospel & Gumbo performance venues.

Partnerships with Churches and civic organizations support these events from front of house to back of house and from beginning to end. “Visit Gospel and Gumbo at gospelandgumbo.com  (currently under re-construction by Urban City Youth)

Sir Griot is a reading escapade to explore great African kings and queens and seven entrepreneurial principles they used to scale their village to a legendary empire.  As students get into character, they visualize themselves standing in the shoes of royal legends who looked like them.

In recital briefs, readers reduce their fear of public speaking while increasing reading and language scores. Themed in Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship, Sir Griot motivates students to form teams to perform short monologue briefs. QR codes throughout the books open video links to examples of student performances of short monologue briefs. These can be rehearsed at home then recited at school workshops.  Visit Sir Griot landing page at sirgriot.com – under re-construction
